Talking Points Memo & Top Story
Time writer accuses Fox News of lying
"For the past few weeks there hasn't been a lot of news in America - the health care debate goes on, Afghanistan is not going well, and the economy is still stuck in the mud. So when the White House attacked Fox News the media woke up and everybody had an opinion. But some of the opinions were downright irresponsible. Enter Time columnist Joe Klein, who wrote that 'Fox News peddles a fair amount of hateful crap ... much of it is flat out untrue.' But even though he has plenty of space, Klein fails to illustrate his point. So being a fair kind of guy, I invited Klein onto The Factor to make his case. A Time publicist told us that Mr. Klein is 'unavailable.' The truth is, Mr. Klein is scared. As a truth-seeker myself, I'd like to know how Fox News spreads 'seditious lies' to its 'demographic sliver' of an audience. That's rich! The Factor reaches more people in one hour than Time does in a week. Finally, I think it's time for the Fox News controversy to fade. So I'm ready to go trick-or-treating with Rahm Emanuel. What a scare that would be!"

The Factor welcomed FNC media analyst Bernie Goldberg, who described Joe Klein's criticism as reckless. "There's enough on this channel," Goldberg said, "that would make a liberal commentator like Joe Klein not happy. But when you start throwing around words like 'sedition,' who at Fox News is inciting a rebellion against the government? I would take Klein more seriously if he were a little more consistent in his outrage." Goldberg also offered some pithy advice to President Obama and his inner circle: "They need to realize that they're not in Chicago anymore and Barack Obama is not a mayor. Taking on an entire news network is not presidential." The Factor theorized that FNC is loathed because of its success: "I think the White House, Joe Klein and the left wing media are all going crazy because Fox News is now the most powerful news organization in the United States, and that means in the world."
Impact Segment
More Americans say they are 'conservative'
According to a new Gallup poll, 40% of Americans describe themselves as "conservative," while just 20% are "liberal." The Factor dissected the findings with Fox News' Mary Katharine Ham and Juan Williams. "This is the most popular conservatism has been since 2004," Ham stated, "and the important thing is that it's happening with independents. A lot of people are feeling threatened by the economic environment - they're afraid of Obama's huge spending and outlandish regulations." Williams added that conservatism is also growing in non-economic arenas. "People are pretty upset about the culture in general - there's increasing support for opposing abortion and people think labor unions are too powerful. People like Barack Obama, but a lot of them say he's more liberal than he advertised himself to be."
Personal Story Segment
Too much testosterone in the White House?
Some women complain that Barack Obama surrounds himself with too many men and too much testosterone. The Factor asked FNC's Cheryl Casone and Nina Easton of Fortune for their reactions. "I think there needs to be more testosterone in this White House," Easton asserted. "We need more of the testosterone that prompted George Bush, against all odds and against the entire media and political establishment, to send in more troops to Iraq. We need the kind of testosterone that would make Barack Obama lead the charge on health care." But Casone sided with those who feel women are being excluded. "Does the old boy's club still exist? Sure! I come from Wall Street, where they're still making deals in strip clubs and steak houses. Barack Obama has played 23 rounds of golf since he's been in office, and not one woman was invited before this weekend." The Factor disputed the notion that the Obama White House is an all-male enclave: "Valerie Jarrett is a very close advisor and one of the most powerful women in the world, and certainly Michelle Obama is one of the most powerful people in the White House."
Unresolved Problems Segment
Health care, abortion and the Kennedys
Congressman Patrick Kennedy has criticized the Catholic Church for opposing any health care reform that covers abortion. Democratic strategist Mary Anne Marsh rationalized Kennedy's support for abortion rights. "Every Kennedy who has served in office," Marsh said, "has taken the separation of church and state very seriously. They represent their constituents based on the public good, not their personal religious beliefs." But conservative radio host Michael Graham applauded Catholic authorities for challenging Congressman Kennedy. "It's thrilling to see the Catholic Church finally take on a Kennedy. The Kennedys are just Catholic enough to get your vote, then they ignore the church. This is the first time the church has confronted them, and it's because Patrick Kennedy was such a dope and mouthed off against the church."
The Hume Zone Segment
Do our enemies view Obama as a weak leader?
According to intelligence analysts at Stratfor.com, some of America's foes perceive weakness in President Obama. Fox News political analyst Brit Hume entered the No Spin Zone and seconded that assessment. "President Obama has toured parts of the world," Hume said, "and did a lot of apologizing for the United States. He also pulled away from the establishment of missile defense in Poland and the Czech Republic - he might have done it for the right reasons, but it gave all the appearances of being a reaction to Russian pressure. If you're one of the hard men sitting in Iran wondering what this president is going to do, you have to think that maybe we can face this guy down." The Factor countered that President Obama's approach may eventually pay dividends: "Bush and Cheney were hated and feared. Obama came in and says he wants to take the 'hate' element out because the United States will be stronger if people cooperate and like us. So what may be looked upon as a weakness could be a strength if that works."
Back of Book Segment
  Reality Check
William and Mary has become the first college in America to crown a transgendered homecoming queen. The Factor's Check: "Jessee Vasold was a man, is now a woman, and got the honor at halftime of a football game. Jessee declined to speak with us this evening, but she was nice about turning us down." Also, Vanity Fair magazine has chartered a private jet to take actor Sean Penn to Cuba, where he will attempt to interview Fidel Castro. The Factor's Check: "Don't you just love Penn? On a private jet in the land of communism! This should be some hard-hitting story."
Pinheads and Patriots
  Charlize Theron & Octomom
Monday's Patriots: Charlize Theron and the woman who donated $140,000 to charity in exchange for a long and languid kiss with the actress. And the Pinhead: Octomom Nadya Suleman, who dressed up as a pregnant nun for a Halloween event.
